A WEB-BASED TOOL TO ASSESS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF FEEDS USED FOR FISH FARMING
The online web application that allows the user to estimate the environmental impact (in terms of normalised measures of waste production) simply based on growth performance measurements (initial body weight, final body weight, food conversion ratio) and basic information on feed composition, providing confidence intervals that reflect the amount of information provided.
The main innovative aspect of this tool lies in leveraging the wide range of information available on fish body composition to enable end users to have a reasonable estimation of mass budgets (and, hence, waste production). The formulation of this tool within a bootstrap framework is a further asset, allowing the tool to provide confidence intervals for the estimated parameters that reflect the variability and uncertainty of the given parameters.
This tool is based on mass budgets, using a combination of parametric and non-parametric bootstrapping, and includes a fish composition model that has been calibrated for gilthead seabream, European seabass and common carp. wastEst requires, at the very least, information on gross diet composition ( crude protein , crude ash and crude phosphorus contents ) and rearing performance ( initial body weights , final body weights and feed conversion ratios ), in order to provide meaningful results.
